The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Verónica Macamo, will today meet the chairman of the Standing Committee of the 13th National People’s Congress of China, Li Zhanshu, who is on an official visit to Mozambique, and discuss matters related to strengthening the ties of cooperation between the two countries.
The first vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic, António José Amélia, said that the visit will serve, among other objectives, for Mozambique and China to strengthen ties of cooperation in the parliamentary field and operationalise the agreements signed in the recent visit that the president of the Mozambican parliament made to China.
He hoped that such a move would also serve to accelerate the implementation of the understandings of the parties and make commitments more flexible in a number of areas.
Li Zhanshu will also visit the construction project of the Maputo-Catembe Bridge, funded by the Chinese government and being carried out by companies from the Asian giant.
Yesterday, Li Zhanshu witnessed the launch of the Rural Satellite Television project in Marracuene, Maputo province.
Speaker Veronica Macamo was in Beijing, China, in mid-February of this year, where she met the chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Yu Zhengsheng – who on that occasion said that China was willing to work with Mozambique to expand mutually beneficial cooperation in several areas.
He said that there was a strong commitment on China’s part to work with Mozambique to push forward the implementation of the agreements reached at the China-Africa Cooperation Forum held in Johannesburg in 2015, in which Chinese President Xi Jinping announced 60 billion US dollars-worth of assistance and loans to African countries.
During President Nyusi’s visit to China last year, the two countries signed a global strategic partnership and cooperation agreement which sets out 14 principles guiding bilateral relations, and foresees strengthening mutual contacts between the respective army, police and intelligence services.
On the economic and trade side, the same agreement also devotes a clause to the Chinese New Maritime Silk Road or “One Belt, One Road” initiative, a giant 21st-century infrastructure plan that aims to revive the old silk route between China and Europe through Central Asia, Africa and Southeast Asia.
This will proved the framework for the two countries to cooperate in matters of maritime transport, port construction and industrial port areas, open sea aquaculture and ocean fishing.
