Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi announced today that he will send a proposal to the Assembly of the Republic to revise the Constitution of the Republic in a timely manner after reaching consensus in the peace negotiations with Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama.
The proposed revision provides for the direct election of provincial, district and municipal assemblies, which later will have the responsibility of nominating their respective presidents or governors.
Filipe Nyusi called this consensus “a giant step” for the peace process in Mozambique.
The direct contacts between Nyusi and the leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo, main opposition party) were resumed in December 2016 and a year ago the two leaders agreed to create two commissions, one on decentralisation and the other on military affairs, in the framework of the peace negotiations.
