Famous Fishing Locations in Mozambique

Fishing Spot Number One – Indigo Bay – Bazaruto island

Spot One: Indigo Bay

Indigo Bay Island Resort and Spa offers world-class luxury and facilities, its elegant yet natural design perfectly complimenting the beauty of its tropical location overlooking Indigo Bay on Bazaruto Island.

Nearby, the Indigo Bay activity centre is the base for a host of Mozambique island-based activities, such as diving, fishing, snorkeling and water-skiing.

A state-of-the-art dive-training pool is available onsite at Indigo Bay for guests wanting to hone their diving skills or take up one of several dive courses on offer. Those Indigo Bay guests simply wanting to relax can laze around the beautiful swimming pools, drink cocktails (ask for a caiparinha!) at the wet bar, or while away time at the beach snack bar.

And for ultimate hedonism, the ultra-luxurious new Sanctuary Spa at Indigo Bay offers a range of pampering treatments to revitalize the weariest of souls. If you must check your emails, our refreshingly cool business centre is available.

The Bazaruto archipelago comprises Bazaruto, Benguerra and Magaruque Islands, as well as the smaller Island Santa Carolina, (previously known as Paradise Island). The archipelago, declared a National Park in 2000, sustains a diverse range of fauna and flora including forest, savannah and wetland ecosystems.

Fishing Spot Number Two – Benguerra Lodge – Benguerra Island

Spot Two: Benguerra Lodge

An exquisite piece of paradise in the middle of the Indian Ocean, &Beyond Benguerra Island is a luxury beach holiday destination where time stands still and legends come to life.

Situated on the second largest island in the sunny Bazaruto Archipelago off the coast of Mozambique, the lodge is set in a protected marine conservation area and offers pristine beaches and unspoiled coral reefs teeming with marine life. Looking out onto a sandy beach and set on a deep lagoon unaffected by the tides, this exclusive beach getaway is ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Surrounded by premier diving sites, the lodge is the gateway to an underwater wonderland for divers, with a rich variety of tropical fish species complemented by Africa’s only population of the rare dugong. The deep Mozambique Channel, which runs alongside the island, is renowned for its game fish and Benguerra Island offers some of the world’s best catch-and-release deep sea fishing and fly fishing opportunities.

Fishing Spot Number Three – Linene Island Resort – Bazaruto

Spot Three: Linene Island Resort

Just south of the town of Vilanculos, in Mozambique’s stunning Bazaruto archipelago, sits Linene Island Resort. With transfers to the lodge only available by boat, this is a remote destination for the dedicated angler, with suitably untouched fishing. Light-tackle estuary fishing, popping for GTs in the surf and offshore action are all on the menu.

GTs are what most people are looking for, but you can reasonably expect to bump into amberjacks, sailfish, king mackerel, queen mackerel, wahoo, dorado and the odd marlin.
On top of that, Linene is renowned for the quality of its estuary and shore fishing. The lodge’s proximity to deep water and strong currents that wash huge numbers of bait fish in with the flooding tide means predators are never far away. King mackerel chase these fish surprisingly close to the shore, along with plenty of species of jacks (they call them kingfish round here), queenfish, sharks and rays. Casting poppers into the surf for GTs is a particular speciality. Whatever the time of day, whatever the tide, there’s fishing to be done at Linene.

Fishing Spot Number Four – Matemo Island – Quirimbas Archipelago

Spot Four: Matemo Island

Just south of the town of Vilanculos, in Mozambique’s stunning Bazaruto archipelago, sits Linene Island Resort. With transfers to the lodge only available by boat, this is a remote destination for the dedicated angler, with suitably untouched fishing.
